Instant or Standard. Instant is switched on for the school as part of its order; once it is on, a teacher picks the lane per run. Instant marks the whole class set simultaneously, with most sets of 30 back in 20 to 30 minutes, and draws two papers per script from the allowance, so a script costs £2.40 rather than £1.20. Standard is the default lane, draws one paper per script, and typically returns the same set in 60 minutes. Instant does not change the price of a paper, which is £1.20 on either lane, and turnaround times are typical rather than guaranteed.

Can I try Marky before committing?
Yes. Every school gets a free 14-day trial covering 10 papers, with no card required and no obligation to continue. The papers can come from any class or subject, so there is no need to pick one group to test with. The 14 days start when marking first starts, not when the account is set up, so a trial cannot expire before the department has marked anything. A trial that is set up and never used closes after 30 days. The individual Student Revision plan is separate and is paid by card. Get in touch to start.
How does the paper allowance work?
Each department buys a yearly allowance of papers at £1.20 each (minimum 1,200 papers, £1,440). One paper = one student script marked end-to-end, with all verification passes included, and one free re-mark of a question you query per script, and failed uploads never count at all. A script marked on the Instant lane draws two papers from that same allowance instead of one, because the whole class set is marked simultaneously rather than queued; Instant is available once it is switched on for the school, then chosen for each marking run, not a separate plan, and the unit price stays at £1.20. A script that fails to mark is not charged, on either lane, and a paper a student marks themselves through the student portal comes out of that student's own account and never touches the department's allowance. The allowance covers the whole academic year, so a busy mock month is no problem, because there are no monthly caps. Usage bars in the app and email alerts at 80%, 90% and 100% keep the department ahead of its budget, and you can top up from 30 papers, one class set, at the same £1.20 whenever you need. Unused papers expire at the end of the school year. Full billing, renewal and refund terms.
How do we pay?
By purchase order and invoice. Your school raises one PO a year per department and pays our invoice by bank transfer, which is how department budgets are held and released, so there is no card to put on file and no subscription anyone has to remember to cancel. Each mid-year top-up is invoiced on its own, and its papers are added as soon as the payment reaches us. When the individual Student Revision plan opens, families will pay by card instead, managed and cancelled online any time.
What happens if a department uses up its allowance?
You'll never be surprised: teachers and admins see live usage bars, and admins get alerts at 80%, 90% and 100%. At the limit, marking pauses until the department tops up. Nothing is ever billed that you did not order first, so a department cannot run up a bill it has not budgeted for. Top-ups start from 30 papers at the same £1.20 exc VAT, and the papers are added as soon as your payment reaches us, so it is worth ordering when the 80% alert arrives.
What do student accounts add?
For £25/student/year plus VAT, every student gets the AI study toolkit across the subjects Marky supports: the AI tutor, practice exam generation with AI marking, flashcards with spaced repetition, adaptive practice and guided revision. Each student has a full-year allowance they can see in their portal, so they can spend it during revision season rather than losing what they do not use each month. A student who uses up their allowance can be issued a fresh seat from the school's pool by the school's Marky administrator. It also covers marking their own real past papers against the mark scheme, in the classes where the school switches it on; there is nothing extra to buy, and student self-marking never touches a teaching department's allowance.
Can students or parents subscribe directly?
Soon, with their own personal Marky account, completely independent of any school: sign up with a personal email (13+), pick your subjects, and upload your own past papers and mark schemes to study and self-mark against. £16.99/month or £179/year, every subject we offer included (Maths and Physics at GCSE, AS and A-level, and Biology at GCSE and A-level; Chemistry is coming). Card payment, cancel anytime. Subscriptions are never sold through school logins. Do you offer discounts for Multi-Academy Trusts?
Billing is per department, so each department buys and is invoiced for its own allowance and keeps its own budget. For a trust buying across several schools we will quote for the whole group and invoice centrally. Student accounts are £25 per student per year at any size: each account includes a real amount of AI that costs the same to run for the eight-hundredth student as for the first, so there is no volume saving for us to pass on. Pretending otherwise would just mean charging the smallest schools more to fund a discount for the largest. Get in touch.
